Update on Vancouver Port Strike from Kelly Higginson

National

Restaurants Canada is genuinely concerned about the effects of the strike that began on July 1, 2023, at the Port of Vancouver with the International Longshore, Warehouse Union Canada, and BCMEA. This strike could cause severe damage to our already struggling Restaurant industry. Costs are already at historic highs and the strike could cause costs to rise even further.

We are working in collaboration with other vital trade associations to ensure the impact on our members and the Canadian economy is clearly communicated.

Restaurants Canada is calling on both parties to settle this dispute immediately, and for the federal government to do everything in its power to resolve this labour dispute immediately.

Restaurants Canada has issued a press release to generate attention to this issue. Richard Alexander, Executive Vice President, Government Relations and Public Affairs said; “The ports in British Columbia are essential to supplying our industry and are not easily replaced. During the last labour dispute at BC ports, we experienced significant cost increases and reports of large quantities of produce rotting on board. Our industry and our economy simply cannot afford a shutdown of BC ports. An immediate resolution to this dispute through negotiation of back-to-work legislation is required.”

After a challenging three years with increased labour shortages, rising interest rates and operational costs, restaurants do not need more uncertainty.

We will continue to keep you informed as we work to resolve this dispute immediately.

Sincerely,

Kelly
